What I love about Service

Posted 07 Aug 2012 in Uncategorized
Quite simply and in the most non fluffed way, service to others makes me alive. I very carefully did not say that it makes me FEEL alive although at times it does. Nope… it makes me alive. To exist without service to others is no existence at all.
I used to live in Albuquerque, New Mexico where I held a position with a company that makes cereal. Although this job was “magically delicious” and monetarily fulfilling there was a part of my life that was not being lived. Now looking back I feel like I wasn’t alive. Deep down, a part of me was ripping at my skin to love people in a real way, but this did not fit into my picture of the American dream.
To be in service to others mean to be doing what you were made to do. This doesn’t feel natural to those of us that are not currently experiencing this. Having come from this point of view I remember what it feels like. Maybe you are nervous about what it means to serve others. Maybe you feel like there are enough people “out there” that are already serving that you cannot possibly make any difference. Maybe you have some preconceived notions about the types of individuals or families that you would potentially serve that are holding you back from that initial step.
I want to tell you something. Lean in close to the screen so that you can hear me. It’s not about what you bring to the table. It’s not about what others are doing or not doing. It is certainly not about your preconceived notions about the people you are serving. It’s really not.
When you are in that moment where you are doing what you were created to do it becomes about what you are learning about yourself. It becomes about the legacy that you are leaving for those that will come after you. It’s about people refusing to follow a temporary dream and becoming alive for the first time in their short lives. I love this.
Take it from me… Find something that is going to mess you up. Be a part of something bigger than your 3 bedroom 2 bath dream home. Dare to gamble the American dream on the bigger picture. Drive the status symbol to someone’s house and bring them along for the adventure. I am alive and can’t wait until you join me… it’s amazing on this side.
